10 thoughts on “Contemporary Web Design”

  1. What page width is in fashion for contemporary web design right now?
Note: I am referring to FIXED width only. Not FLUID.

I appreciate that it’ll be too wide for older monitors but a lot of popular sites seem to be ignoring compliance. I’m not so much concerned with compliance as I am concerned with fashion. What width is in fashion for contemporary web design right now? Is a 1000 pixel fixed width alright for website?

  2. I reckon building a website with 950 or 960 px page width. This way it shows up well with a 1024 px width screen. I appreciate many desktops and macs come with wider screens, but you also need to factor in the fact that net books and smart phones now have smaller screens. Fashion is about design, not width and you could easily add a theme or background in the margins of the main site that can make the site look very cool.

  3. Can anyone recommend any readings on the subject of Graphic Design and Contemporary Christianity?
I’m currently in the process of writing my thesis on this topic and I was wondering if anyone out there could point me towards any books, magazine articles, or websites/ web articles relating to the topic. Thanks guys!
Note: There’s a good chance a lot of my thesis will be based on observations. However, I do need actual articles/sources as a requirement for the thesis.

  4. I am wondering if anyone can suggest a good site or guide to get up to speed on latest standards in web design?
I used to do websites, almost ten years ago and back then there was a ton of limitations in what you could do – design was a case of working within these constrictions. Now, I believe things have come along way and I just wanted to get caught up with the latest in “no-no”s and what you can’t do. When I was last working I liked iframes but they weren’t totally accepted by everyone. I’m also wondering if people still use plain old vanilla tables…and I know and am comfortable with css…

so if anyone can recommend a decent contemporary guide to what people are doing in good web design these days…let me know!
I should also say that I am super comfortable in photoshop. I am looking for something sort of casual like a blog – i know about the w3 standards sites…but they are sort of lowest common denominator. I want something that’s a bit more, progressive. From lots of web navigation it seems that fonts are rendered much better than they were back in the day – and I am not talking about images with text in them – where to find info on how this is done?
    thanks organize!

i wonder why iframes are obsolete – actually i wonder in general why frames never caught on. I particularly liked the idea of keeping navigation in one place…I don’t think anyone bothers anymore but why? did something take their place?

  5. DESIGNERS/PROGRAMMERS: Can you please recommend a modern-looking user interface for a web-based application?
Hi guys. I’m looking to make a web site’s user interface more modern looking. The page features buttons such as PLAY… PAUSE… STOP… etc. etc. Is there a website that you’ve seen that has a modern looking design that I could play off of…. such as an online music site or anything like that? I’m not looking for futuristic, Star Wars stuff… just someone real contemporary… so that if you saw it you thought it was a well-designed, cutting edge web application. If you could include a link that would be great. I just need some design ideas for buttons/colors and overall design themes. Thank you VERY much!!!
P.S. I’m not actually looking for a place to find images and buttons and stuff… more interested in existing sites and what they’ve done that looks cool, clean, and modern. Thank you!

  6. Hmmm, maybe start on explaining how the Book of the Celts used alot of graphics to put the point across for each chapter… then maybe go into how they used to use pictures to tell a story, because lot of people couldn’t read but could look at a wall, or a ceiling, (Sistine Chapel) and relate to a sermon from the images displayed there. The I would research new churches, and how they now use plasma screens, and catchy images like flames from a chopper or dark Gothic lettering to try to steer the “Next generation” of worshipers. Hope this helps.

  7. web-design question and how to start it?
okay if i wanted to make a web-site for myself (i do not care about paying for it, does not necessarily have to be free)…i would like to make it look modern and contemporary or at least with the best navigation through it and very user friendly…how would i go about doing that on my own? i understand some coding and what-not, not a professional, but i’d like to try it out…and thinking about putting let’s say for a company a page where the people fill out their information and it emails it to the specified email…how would you do all this? what would be the best step for me to take?

  8. All good answers for learning. From your question, it sounds like you just want something clean, modern and cheap.

If you want to get something up quickly, search for “web templates”. There are thousands of samples you can download. You will need a hosting provider and you’ll need to know about DNS and domains and how to upload files.

These sites are pre-written and you only have to change the title and various pieces to make it yours. Also a good basis for seeing what others have done to try to learn it.

You also should research “Content Management Systems” like DotNetNuke, Joomla, Xoom and Drupal. This are pre-written websites with different “Themes” you can install and configure without writing a line of code.

Other answerer is right, all the new stuff is moving to MVC (Model, View, Controller) architecture. Even .NET has an MVC flavor available, codeigniter is a php framework that is available and you may
read up on ruby on rails that implements an MVC architecture.
