Website Design – A Technical Approach

Website design is a comprehensive method of multidisciplinary techniques. The websites are comparable with the print media such as newspapers, magazines, and leaflets etc. which are published to spread general or specific information among people. The websites are the electronic version of latest communication media which offers more flexibility in every aspect over the print publishing.

A website contains several ‘web pages’ containing information within the specific location of that website. The first web page of the site is called ‘home page’. Sometimes the first web page contains only welcome note and/or some graphic image, a disclaimer or asks for language or location selection. These are known as ‘splash pages’. These are more common in commercial websites. The web pages are written using HTML language and located in a URL which is specific for every page. The web pages are linked with each other using Hyperlinks which helps the viewer to navigate from one page to another. Once created the website has to be submitted or uploaded over the internet so that public can view it. The FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is most widely used to publish the website online. There are several techniques to increase the rate of viewing the website which include linking the website with a search engine (such as Google, Yahoo Search etc.), advertising the link on other websites etc.
The website design involves in-depth application of various disciplines such as mark-up languages (HTML, XHTML, XML) and style-sheet languages (CSS) which are used to write the information, orient them and prepare the layout of the pages; script programs to serve both client side and the server side (JavaScript, PHP, ASP etc.); databases for integrating and storing the informations in the form of data; and multimedia tools (e.g. Flash, Maya etc.) for attractive graphical representation. Therefore, websites have two parts, one observable front-end and the other hidden back-end, accessible by the developers. The front end contains the information, graphics, audio or audio-visual effects whereas the back-end contains the source scripting codes.

Naturally website design involves a number of expertise from different fields under one project manager or full time involvement of one or few website developers. The dynamic websites require regular control for updating the informations. While designing a website, one should remember the basic aspects which are-
1. Purpose of creating the website is important, so the orientation of contents in the site should serve the purpose.
2. To increase ‘visibility’, i.e. access by viewers, more keywords, bulleted lists, hyperlinks etc. should be used so that search engines can easily catch the site.
3. Website design and appearance should be user-friendly and attractive in order to increase traffic to that site.

The web-developer cannot control the devices like the web browser, operating system, audio aids, font type etc. devices that the user has enabled on own computer. They follow certain techniques so that the web pages display the same what they are coded for.

  1. Am I in a good career position?
I’m in a vocational high school and for my shop class I chose computer and office technology, and when school starts again I will be a sophomore. I’ve always liked working with computers, anyway, I just want to know if I have myself in a position for a good career.

Here is the description of the course:
The Computer And Office Technology program offers an Information Technology career for students in studying today’s complex information systems in a state of the art microcomputer environment. Students in this program are trained using the latest equipment, techniques, computer applications, programming languages, web design tools and other skills required to process information used in today’s world. All students are provided with a solid foundation in the logical thinking skills necessary for success in this field. Intensive training in Microsoft Office Software Applications leads to expert certification in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook. Students test for Microsoft Office Specialists (MOS) Certifications recognized worldwide. Office practices and procedures include: Century 21 Accounting, QuickBooks automated accounting, creation of standard documents used in today’s business world, filing, and employability skills. Students also master web design techniques using the HTML language and Macromedia tools including Dreamweaver, Flash and Fireworks. The Visual Basic programming language provides a solid foundation for students interested in game design after graduation.

Upon graduation, job opportunities include: Office Technology Specialists, Administrative Assistants, Accounting specialists, Computer Programmers, and Web Design and Maintenance.

Articulation agreements exist between this course at my school and the following colleges and institutions: Bay State College, Eastern Maine Technical College, New England Institute of Technology, Newbury College, Johnson & Wales University, Wentworth Institute, University of Southern Maine, York County Technical Institute, and Northern Essex Community College.

Lastly, the licences, certificates/affiliations I can recieve if I complete the course are: Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Certification and IC3

    What do you guys think?

  2. Hands-free chat for freelance writers/artists/etc?
I work from home as a writer and artist right now. It gets pretty lonely as I don’t know any artists/writers locally and there are no groups that I can meet up with for miles (and I can’t afford to travel that much). I tried to start my own, but there wasn’t a lot of interest. I would also prefer to have people to talk to while I work as that is when I feel isolated.

So… I’m looking to start an online ‘office/studio’ arrangement with people around the world in a similar situation. You don’t have to be really talkative if you don’t want to be (you wouldn’t chat constantly in an office anyway) and if you are worried about copyright then you don’t have to share your work at all. I have ordered a web cam/mic as I don’t sit right next to my pc and don’t really care if people see me working (all my finished work is advertised online anyway). I just need to feel like I’m not shut up alone in my room all day every day as that gets depressing (which in turn lowers my work output as I feel unmotivated).

I also think having people ‘around’ will encourage me to take better care of myself (as I’ll be on camera) and not get distracted with other things instead of working. Peer pressure for the win!

So… any takers? I have Yahoo Messenger (I think there is hands free conferencing on there) or that Skype thing? I’m based in Essex/London, although it doesn’t really matter where you are (just thinking in terms of time zones). You don’t have to be an artist or writer – anything creative like animation, design, etc. Would just be good to get a group together of like-minded people.
Should add that I normally work from 9 to 5 (UK time) Monday to Friday.

  3. Yes, these are great skills to have. My advice to you is:

    1) If you want to be a programmer right out of school, start learning languages on your own. Most likely you won’t get deep enough in these classes to pick up a programming job right out of school (unless you ar ea comp sci major)

    2) If you want to be more on the busines side and not programming, take some business courses or learn about business and IT outside of class.

    3) If you can’t do the above two suggestion or are unsure, I would suggest joining an IT Consulting firm right out of school, you will have travel and it may be long hours but you will most likely learn a lot.

  7. I don’t think anyone can tell you whether or not you’ll be good at it. Are you passionate about it? Do you want to do it? Do you have fun or get happy when you think about doing?

This is a decision you need to make for yourself.
