How to Select the Right Domain Name

Selecting a memorable domain name is not just a task for online companies. Every brick-and-mortar business needs to maintain an online presence in order to compete for today’s buyers. Why you askc Consumers are increasingly turning to the internet as their primary resource for shopping or locating businesses. In Australia the number of internet subscribers grows almost 15% per year. Mid 2011 subscriptions reached 11 million, and that doesn’t even include those who access the web via mobile phones. No business can compete successfully long-term if such trends are ignored.

Create an SEO Friendly Domain Name

The ultimate goal of creating a website is to increase your businesses visibility to prospective customers. Your first step to building a strong online marketing campaign is to select a competitive domain name. You can do so by using SEO friendly keywords in your domain name that illustrate your products and services. By doing so you are assisting both your target market and search engines when identifying your niche. In saying this, if your business already has an established reputation and following, it may be more advantageous to simply use a version of your company’s name.

Things to Remember When Choosing a Domain Name

Every domain name is required to be unique, though there may be several similar versions using different top level domains (TLDs). The TLD is at the end of the addresses, such as .com, .info, .net, and so forth. Some businesses prefer to purchase more than one version, using a global domain (.com) as their official website and designing the others to refer people to their global domain. You can also include a geographic designation, such as “.com.au” for Australia or “.com.nz” for New Zealand.

Whichever approach you choose, the goal is to create a memorable domain so customers can easily find their way back to your site and share your information with friends. Avoid using words which are difficult to spell, or tags which may seem clever but are hard to recreate. If someone has already claimed the name you desire, don’t just change a singular word to a plural or deliberately misspell one of the words to create a unique name. While you may be able to reserve such a domain, it is unlikely many people will find you. A name which clearly identifies the type of business you have will be significantly more memorable, a key to garnering repeat traffic.

Domain Name Mistakes to Avoid

Avoid choosing a .net or .info version of a domain name that is already in use as .com. For instance, if would like the name partyguru.com, but it’s already taken, don’t just settle for partyguru.net. Most customers start with a .com search and you could be helping your competition build their business instead of yours! It’s a much better idea to try a different version, such as bestpartyguru.com instead. Also, try to avoid domain names that are excessively long. Short and sweet is easier to remember!

It’s also essential to avoid copyright or trademark infringements. If you have a question about whether a term you wish to use is registered to another company, check first and avoid future difficulties.

  1. Web Development Pricing?
    Hello –

My tennis pro is the best guy ever he has hooked me up with many jobs… he treats me really well… I am currently doing his website.. Total is $375 I gave him a $100 discount because he ha been so nice and he has been in bead and unable to walk or get up because he has a herniated disk in his back and is having major back surgery… He has been nice and I am returning the favor…

Am I doing the right thing by taking $100 off? I charge $25.00 hr for Web Development and spent a total of 15 hours on this project…

    What do you think?

  2. Matt, not only is it the right thing to do.

But you must have a heart of gold.

    The answer is yes.

  3. how do you price web-development work?
As a freelance web developer/designer, I have been asked by a client to give the cost of some proposed work – I have no idea on how to price this web dev work. Any ideas?

  4. This field has many discrepancies in cost. It is only my estimation, without source when I say that a standard website package (you know, the average 5 page static content) starts at around $800 and goes up. Anything more than that is sufficiently higher.
You may wish to give some more information on your project.

  5. Is there a price standard/guide for web design and development?
Basically I am looking for a price guide/standard. I am new to the pricing my own freelance and am looking for a helpful resource to get me started on pricing web designs and development as well as CMS. Sometimes I have to price logo designs as well.

  6. There’s a lot of factors that go into this, but if you really want to be universal, charge by the hour. It is not uncommon to see web developers make between $10 to $20 an hour or more. Most clients want a fixed cost, so you’ll need to factor in time spent coding their project (reuse will influence how much you can undercut the other guys), doing the design and layout, adding content, and any administrationconfiguration tools and training. You’ll of course need to do consultation to define their website and project goals. Be aware of off the shelf solutions that will save you both time and money. Do spec out time spent and costs of common projects such as blogging, entertainmentevent websites, ecommerce applications and business wikis so you’ll have ball park figures you can use.

Hosting must be discussed, who’s responsible for the final residing place of the project?

There’s also the matter of support to be discussed, are you available to fix problems after the contract is finished? When is the contract finished? How much will you charge for support? If there’s a problem with the hosting service, make sure they know you’re not responsible for fixing it, or consider that as part of support.

  7. What is a good web development company in Puerto Rico?
I would like to know of a good web development company for a few projects… any ideas? What should I look for (other than prices)?

  9. I think you should go for this company. It is Visual Xpert©. They render good web designing services which are graphically improved and technically well supported. I think this can surely help you out. They have designed a website of mine and has got many projects. many websites designed by them are by now up and running. I think its something to fool around and indeed senseless to patch up your website with advices from someone free of cost. But, as you wish to create a website go for someone experienced in web designing services. I dont think that you will get someone to hire for the local web market in your area. But, if you have a PayPal account or a FedXpress account you can have it done just at the cost of some mere dollars which any common man can spent. You will find how worthy the website they will design to you is. They will turn out into a money making machine. They are the one who have designed many company official website now of late. If you wanna check out an example log on to http://www.benzkut.co.cc/. This website is now administered by another one but designed and still managed by VisualXpert©. If you want a detailed description about the company you should mail its CEO and manager. I will get you his Email ID. They were the one who designed a website for my friend.
